Up & Coming

Weekends aren't the only times the neighborhood offers us some activities. Weekdays we can still have fun.
First off, during the week is probably the best time to go to the Beer Garden. Hipsters will make the weekend miserable by lining up for entrance, but during the week they seem to stay in their respective boroughs. Skip the line and enjoy a pitcher with friends pretty much any night this week.

Waltz entertains the masses this week with comedy and open mic. Tuesday at 9 Matt Taylor hosts Tuesday Night Comedy and Wednesday at 8 Bill Everson hosts the weekly open mic.

Wednesday at Socrates they are screening Kikujiro from Japan. I have heard from Helen, that this is a great movie and the one she was most looking forward to seeing. Due to black outs and heat waves I have already missed the 2 movies I was planning on seeing. Bummer.

Though these gigs are not in Astoria LIC based artist, J Walter Hawkes, and his quartet and quintet, depending on the show, will be playing their old school jazzy tunes this Wednesday from 9-12(ish) at Detour, and later this month (8/29) they will be playing the Juniper Valley Park concert series in Middle Village at 7:30. Both shows are free...but be nice to the tip jar at Detour. Once again, Wednesday is one of those "be in two places at once" nights for me, so hopefully I'll be able to swing (pun sort of intended) down to Detour to catch a few tunes, and hopefully the ukelale.
