The Weekender

It’s gonna be a hot one this weekend! Heat wave here we come. I can’t believe that I have to cross my fingers that the power will be alright this weekend. But given the situation the past almost 2 weeks, it’s a sad fact that we all have to worry about.
But at least there are some fun things happening.

We can definitely use a chill out, take advantage of the free yoga and tai chi classes Saturday and Sunday respectively, from 11-12 at Socrates Sculpture park.

Tonight from 8-12 enjoy Jazz music at new café lounge Wassi (35-05 20th Avenue) with half off your second drink.

This weekend is the St. Irene Chrysovalantou Monastery Street Festival. Located at 23rd Ave. from 35th to mid 37th St. & 36th St. from 23rd Ave. to under the Amtrak overpass. 3 days of street fair, oh my!
Sunday is the smaller 114 Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol fair on Broadway from Steinway to 47th street.
It’s street fair madness this weekend!

Sunday night is the 3rd installment of the Hell on Reels Moving Image Festival. Held in the Hell Gate Social’s back patio the films start at 8:30.

Out of the Dark

Well folks the lights are back on in Western Queens. Con Ed is still out in force, with trucks all over the place. I’ve seen PSE&G trucks and ones from other states out lending a hand. The first lawsuit is already under way against Con Ed, and Queens DA Brown is launching an independent investigation, while our councilmen and assembly men are, well, as pissed as the rest of us. I give them kudos for the eyerolls and disgusted looks as the Mayor was complimenting the inept CEO for the atrocious job Con Ed has done in not only not updating the infrastructure from 40-50 year old equipment, but not properly taking care of the first failing feeder cables, and most importantly grossly misrepresenting the extent of the problem. Hopefully the residents of Western Queens will have answers we deserve. If you want more information or just want to rant about the situation, head over here. Also, if you lost out of food due to total black out then head here for a downloadable reimbursement form. Con Ed will reimburse $300 without receipts, a change from the initial $150 with no receipts and $300 with receipts of proof of loss.

I think this sums up how a lot of us feel:
